Brushfire Beginnings
By The Founder Clint Berkey
Brushfire Tacos y Tapas opened in June 2013 at 83rd Avenue and West Thunderbird Road in Peoria, Arizona — but the roots of our story run much deeper.
Founder Clint Berkey's journey began with Brushfire World Evangelism, a missionary foundation he established in 1984 in Honduras. Fueled by a deep love for Latin America and its vibrant culture, Clint spent 14 years as an evangelist before returning to the Pacific Northwest when his assignment from the Lord was complete. At this time, he returned to his business roots and built a successful career as an insurance and financial advisor. Upon reaching retirement age Clint knew that his mission of giving back and serving others was not complete and that more was instore.
Brushfire Tacos y Tapas was founded as a "give back" business, designed to serve the local community and support meaningful causes, continuing Clint's passion for service beyond the mission field.
Years later, while scouting property for his son's coffee business in Arizona, Clint found himself with more land than expected — and a sense that something greater was taking shape. After prayer and reflection, the vision of a small Mexican restaurant emerged. Encouraged by his daughter, Hope, who reminded him of the original Brushfire mission, Clint saw the opportunity to revive that purpose in a new way.
Our transformation from a missionary foundation to a restaurant was a natural evolution—one inspired by faith, family, and the desire to keep the spirit of "Brushfire" alive in a new setting. By naming the restaurant after the original ministry, we built a place where generosity and community remain at the heart of all we do.
And so, Brushfire Tacos y Tapas was born — rooted in faith and built on a legacy of service.
From day one, we've followed two simple principles:
- Exceptional Food, handcrafted with bold flavors and fresh ingredients.
- Warm Hospitality, where every guest feels welcomed, valued, and uplifted.
